Sania Mirza on Saturday night created history by becoming first Indian player to win women’s doubles title at a Grand Slam when she clinched the Wimbledon women’s doubles title with Martina Hingis beating Makarova-Vesnina 5-7 7-6 7-5 in a thrilling final in London.

The top-seeded pair staged a remarkable comeback in the third and final set. Trialing 2-5 in the set, Sania-Hingis won five consecutive games to clinch the title.

Roger Federer remarked the ladies’ final as ‘epic’ and expressed his happiness for Sania and Hingis.

“Epic ladies’ doubles final! So thrilled for @MirzaSania and @mhingis”, Federer tweeted.

Federer plays Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final on Sunday, chasing his eighth Wimbledon title.
