
Former India captain Rani Rampal, who led the Indian women’s hockey team to an unexpected fourth-place finish at the deferred Tokyo Olympics, has been dropped from the 33-member women’s core group. Hockey India published the list of 33-member core probables group on Saturday.
The players have been asked to report for the national camp at SAI’s Bengaluru campus on Sunday. THe camp will be held till May 13, ahead of the Indian women’s hockey team’s tour to Australia as a preparatory event ahead of the Asian Games in China.
Rani has not been a regular part of the Indian team since the side’s exploits at Tokyo as she has been battling injuries. Rani was named in the side for the tour of South Africa earlier this year. She played her 250th game for India against Belgium in the FIH Women’s Hockey Pro League last year.
Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, Vandana Katariya, Sharmila Devi, Deepika, Sangita Kumari, Mumtaz Khan, and Sunelita Toppo are the forwards named in the core probables.
“After the last camp in which we were able to establish our baseline for the needed physical output and addressed individual improvements, we’re looking to improve our team structure and tactics. Playing Australia in Australia at the end of this camp will help us assess where we are compared to the top of women’s hockey,” said Janneke Schopman, Indian women’s hockey team chief coach.

Midfielders: Nisha, Salima Tete, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Jyoti, Navjot Kaur, Monika, Mariana Kujur, Sonika, Neha, Baljeet Kaur, Reena Khokhar, Vaishnavi Phalke, and Ajmina Kujur.
