Modhwadia said it was a courtesy call, adding that the discussions were positive and pertained to strengthening relations between Gujarat and Britain.

Hours after meeting Chief Minister Narendra Modi,British high commissioner to India James Bevan on Monday held a 20-minute meeting with Gujarat Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia at the party headquarters here.

Modhwadia said it was a courtesy call, adding that the discussions were positive and pertained to strengthening relations between Gujarat and Britain. He said he urged Bevan to open a British consulate office in Ahmedabad and took up the issue of work-related restrictions imposed on students from Gujarat going to the UK for studies.

Modhwadia also broached the subject of restrictions on tourist visas, particularly for Gujaratis. Bevan’s response was positive and cooperative,he said.

Replying to a question on whether there was any discussion on the 2002 communal riots,he said since it was an internal issue of Gujarat, there was no talk on it.
