J-K Sikhs have now followed Kashmiri Pandits in demanding a separate homeland. Various Sikh organisations, who held a press conference on Saturday under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir State Akali Dal, made the demand.

State Akali Dal chief Jagdev Singh said: ‘‘If the state is divided, we too will want a separate homeland. Keeping in view our population and sacrifices made for the country, we are the first ones to deserve it.’’

Till recently, the Sikhs were speaking against trifurcation, dubbing it a move against the state’s secular structure. ‘‘We don’t want state divided. But if every community gets its share, we will want ours,’’ Singh said.

Of late, many parties have started distributing pamphlets on separate homelands. Among these are Jammu Mukti Morcha and Jammu Joint Students Federation.
