NEW DELHI, November 27: Taking a sympathetic view of the inconvenience caused to students following withdrawal of school buses by contract operators in the capital protesting the guidelines issued by it, the Supreme Court on Thursday relaxed the `ten-year experience must’ rule for drivers while admonishing the operators for holding the populace to ransom.

Mishap kills 34

BANGALORE, November 27: Thirty four persons, including fourteen women and seven children, of a marriage party were killed when a bus carrying them fell into an overflowing canal in Halikeri in Karnataka’s Haveri district on Thurday evening, police said. All 34 bodies had been fished out, police added.

Summons to Gopal

CHENNAI, November 27: The Madras Union of Journalists (MUJ), the Madras Reporters Guild and Chennai Press Club on Thursday strongly condemned the issue of summons to R R Gopal, editor of Tamil bi-weekly, Nakkheeran, for having met sandalwood smuggler Veerappan allegedly without the Tamil Nadu Government’s permission. In a joint statement, they said it was an infringement on Press freedom to compel a journalist to disclose information given by a news source.

Gur control

NEW DELHI, November 27: The government on Thursday night revoked the gur control order, bowing to pressure from various state government, farmer associations and traders besides political parties. The decision to scrap the order was taken by Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Rahguvansh Prasad Singh. Anticipating a shortfall in sugarcane production and to ensure augmenting of sugar production, the government had passed the gur control order. The order fixed a limit of 250 quintals at the wholesale end or turnover of 10 days trade.
