CHENNAI, JAN 13: Top seeded Chetan Baboor of PSCB lifted his fourth successive men’s title, while junior national champion Poulomi Ghatak of Bengal completed a double winning the women’s crown, in the 60th Indian-Oil Servo Senior National table tennis championship this evening.
In the finals, Baboor outplayed his teammate and third seeded S Raman in straight games, while third seeded Ghatak, who won the junior title in Jalandhar last month, prevailed over statemate Mouma Das after losing a game.
In a keenly-fought match, Baboor, the favourite, scored a 21-18, 21-19, 21-17 win, ending any hopes of Raman to avenge his defeat in last year’s final played between them.
Baboor, who had earlier won the title in Pondicherry, Thane and Jammu, bagged a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and Ghatak won Rs 35,000.
A beaming Baboor said: “I was tired. But my blocks were good and I won some crucial points on rallies.”
The 16-year-old Ghatak, who ousted defending champion Kasturi Chakraborty (Railways) in the semi-final, outclassed the second-seeded Das 21-15, 19-21, 21-16, 21-14.
In the doubles, the singles finalists combined to lift the titles. The top seeded pair of Raman and Baboor defeated Subhajit Saha-Souvik Dey (Bengal) 21-14, 21-15, while Ghatak and Das beat Mantu Ghosh-Anindita Chakraborty (Railways) 12-21, 21-19, 21-16.
