While there are different birth methods, neither is better or more “normal” than the other. Emphasising the same, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan once spoke about going through two C-section deliveries to birth sons Taimur and Jehangir. “People…I don’t know…don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to acknowledge it, but it is also a form of birth. If you have to go through the surgery, if you have to do it like that because of certain complications or even out of choice, I think it’s totally up to the mother’s comfort. You have taken that decision and that’s how you wanted it to be,” Kareena told Kanika Chadda Gupta on her YouTube channel in 2021.

The 3 idiots actor continued, “So, then, why is it different, like normal or abnormal delivery. It is not abnormal. It’s also a way of being and a choice. That’s the way that sometimes deliveries have to happen. It doesn’t make you abnormal in any way. You are even stronger because you are going through a surgery where you are cut through.”

Taking a leaf out of her candid confession, let’s understand what changes the narrative when it comes to childbirth.

Dr Richa Bharadwaj, consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said every birth is normal as long as it results in a safe mother and baby. “The idea that only vaginal birth is ‘natural’ or ‘ideal’ has evolved. Today, we understand that every woman’s pregnancy, anatomy, and medical condition are unique, so the choice of delivery method should be based on comfort, safety, and medical judgment, not social pressure,” said Dr Bharadwaj.

Is it really okay to choose a C-section if a mother feels more comfortable with it?

While C-sections were once reserved for emergencies, they’re now common and safe when done for the right reasons, said Dr Bharadwaj. “Some women opt for planned or elective C-sections due to past complications, anxiety about labour pain, or medical factors like placenta issues or breech presentation. As long as it’s a well-informed decision and under medical supervision, it’s perfectly valid. The key is to understand the pros, cons, and recovery process,” said Dr Bharadwaj.

Does a C-section affect future pregnancies or recovery?

Usually not, especially when done carefully and supported by good postnatal care. According to Dr Bharadwaj, recovery may take slightly longer than vaginal birth, but with proper rest, wound care, and gradual return to activity, most mothers heal well. “Many women have healthy second or even third C-sections, like Kareena herself. What matters most is early mobilisation, balanced nutrition, and following your doctor’s guidance,” said Dr Bharadwaj.

What should expectant mothers keep in mind when it comes to delivery choices?

*Stay informed: Discuss all birth options with your gynaecologist early in pregnancy.

*Don’t compare: Every pregnancy and labour journey is different.

*Trust your body and your doctor: The safest route for you and your baby is the right route.

*Focus on recovery, not the label: Whether vaginal or C-section, both require postpartum care, nutrition, and emotional support.

Motherhood isn’t defined by how you deliver, but how you nurture and recover. Every birth deserves to be celebrated, not compared, shared, Dr Bharadwaj.
