There are so many words that can describe Varun Dhawan — a versatile actor, fitness enthusiast, great dancer, and fashion icon. But did you know that the Bhediya star is also a big foodie, to the extent that he hates to share some of his favourite dishes? Well, it’s not us, Varun Dhawan made that revelation himself in an exclusive interaction with indianexpress.com. However, there is an exception to this rule when it comes to his wife Natasha Dalal.
But the actor knows how to make up for those “day(s) of indulgence” with a dedicated fitness routine and a strict diet plan. Keep scrolling to learn what his meal and exercise routines comprise, and also that one thing not many people know about him.
You are extremely dedicated to keeping fit. What does fitness mean to you?
I view fitness as a state of body and mind, not just physical appearance. My fitness regime involves a mix of workouts, focusing on strength, agility, flexibility, balance, and stability.
As such, what does your daily workout routine look like — or are there more ‘skip the gym’ days?
My daily workout routine involves a mix of Pilates, weight training, and cardio. However, I do make it a point to work out every day.
Do you also stick to a strict meal plan? What does it comprise?
I follow an intermittent fasting routine for 14 to 16 hours daily. My diet typically includes coffee, egg white omelette or oats, veggies and chicken, makhana (fox nuts), and lots of water.
…and what about cheat days?
It’s not that much about a cheat day. I look at it as a day of indulgence, where I get to enjoy my favourite food without thinking twice. I have always been addicted to the KFC Zinger; it’s my go-to meal in most of the situations. However, with them bringing the Chizza back again, it’s made my decisions a lot harder. It’s two of my favourite things; how do you not devour that all the time?
Does Varun Dhawan believe in sharing his food? If there is one food that you would hate to share even with your wife, what would that be?
I’m possessive about a few of my food choices, I really won’t share something when I’m enjoying those. It’s a bit tricky not to share with Natasha, cause I would never say no to her for anything.
But to the first point, I was out for lunch with a friend the other day and was papped at a store in Bandra (in Mumbai) and they got a glimpse of me denying him a bite. There are some things you can’t share.
Actors often fear getting stereotyped. What is your mantra to stand out and stay relevant?
I believe in versatility and constantly try to experiment with different roles to avoid getting stereotyped. I think the key to staying relevant is by adapting to the changing trends in cinema and audience preferences.
One thing about you that not many people know.
I wanted to be a wrestler as a child and am a fan of the wrestling star “The Rock”.
You also seem to enjoy experimenting with your style. How would you describe it?
My go to style would be a blend of high-end fashion and street styles. I love experimenting with traditional and modern ensembles, such as pairing a kurta with Chelsea boots or a modern dhoti-kurta.
How has 2023 been for you — both personally and professionally.
I think 2023 has been great, both professionally and personally. It’s been everything in equal measures which is great. I wouldn’t complain about it. And hopefully looking forward to the new year now.
