The most recent performer to experience being hit in the face while onstage is singer and songwriter Harry Styles, who was smacked in the eye by a flying object during a concert in Vienna. Previously, singers like Bebe Rexha, Drake, Kelsea, Ballerini, Pink, among others have been the target of hurled objects in the middle of their performances.
Rexha, 33, was hit on the face with a cell phone while performing in New York City last month which split her eyebrow and required stitches, according to People Magazine.
These events even led none other than popstar Adele to address the most recent safety issues at concerts earlier this month during a break in her Weekends with Adele show at The Colosseum in Las Vegas. “Have you noticed how people are forgetting show etiquette at the moment? People are throwing s— on stage. Have you seen that?” the singer asked, according to a fan-filmed video, before joking: “I dare you — I dare you to throw something at me. I’ll kill you.”
Charlie Puth shared similar thoughts on Twitter this month. “This trend of throwing things at performers while they are onstage must come to an end,” he wrote. “It’s so disrespectful and very dangerous. Please just enjoy the music, I beg of you.”
It is a given that concertgoers are enthusiastic and thrilled about attending their favourite singer’s live event. However, this does not excuse their poor behaviour. While we all are well-aware how wrong it is to fling objects at others, there is something called “concert etiquette” which each one of us must follow, especially if it’s our first time.
In layman terms, concert etiquette refers to a set of social norms observed by those attending musical performances. These norms vary depending upon the type of music performance and can be stringent or informal. So, we turned to an expert who laid down the basic dos and don’ts for us.
Here are some dos and don’ts you must follow while attending a concert, according to Madiha Rasool, Professional Image Consultant, Soft Skills Trainer and Etiquette Coach.
Dos
*Arrive early so you can pick a preferred seat/standing area if it’s general admission, or you can make your way to your seat without disturbing others once the concert has begun. And if you arrive after the concert has begun and the audience is seated, wait until a break in the music to take your seat.
*Take your cues from the crowd in terms of singing along. When everyone is jumping and singing along — join in — but don’t belt your heart out if it’s going to prevent others from actually hearing and enjoying the artist.
*Take your cues on applause from the crowd too. If you’re at a classical music concert, it can sometimes be tricky to tell when it’s the end of a piece, so let the audience around you lead the way with applause.
*Be aware of personal space if you are at a standing concert, but not in a mosh pit situation. No one wants to be bumped and stepped on during a show, so temper your movements and be respectful. This is also very important if people are holding drinks.
*Your outfit should be appropriate to the theme of the concert and comfortably stylish. If it’s a standing audience, the footwear has to be chosen mindfully.
Don’ts
*Don’t push and block others when you’re in a general admission situation or at least make reasonable adjustments to help those around you enjoy the concert.
*Don’t film the entire concert and post it to social media. It detracts from your own experience and it can block other’s views.
*Don’t cough if you are at a classical music concert, if you can help it. Come prepared with cough drops (not in noisy wrappers–open a few ahead of time).
*Don’t push your way to the front of the crowd, especially in a group. You didn’t get there early, so the front is not your right.
She concluded and said, “Going to a concert can be a great experience, made fantastic when those around you all act with courtesy. Remember, etiquette is all about putting those around you at ease.”
