In a world that can often feel impersonal, carrying sentimental objects — such as a locket containing family photos — may sound old school, but it is something tennis star Novak Djokovic does every time he is on tour. In a viral video by GQSports, shares the significance of his two necklaces. “I have two necklaces that I wear with me all the time. One is the cross, a connection to Orthodox Christianity. Very important to me. Another necklace resembles the tennis ball and is also symbolic of the planet. It has a symbolic connection to my travelling and my sport. Once you open it, the pictures of my family – my wife, me and my son, my daughter, and our doggies. Extremely important necklace to me,” he expressed.

Djokovic added that the keepsake reminds him that his family is always there with him. “I open this necklace up every day, and I kiss every member of my family. I kind of know that they are always with me even if we are not physically together. So, I wear all these all the time,” shared Djokovic.

Sahiba Rattan Sethi, counselling psychologist, founder – Ummeed Healing, concurred that, indeed, such keepsakes can offer a profound sense of comfort and connection. According to her, carrying favourite pieces of family, like a locket with photos, serves as a tangible connection to loved ones. “These objects hold emotional value and act as a bridge between the past and the present, evoking feelings of love, security, and continuity,” said Sethi.

Psychologically, such keepsakes often function as anchors in times of uncertainty or distress. “These items provide a sense of grounding. When we’re away from our loved ones or navigating difficult times, the physical presence of something that represents them can help us feel less alone,” shared Sethi.

Keepsakes like lockets or other family mementos also serve as positive memories. Sethi highlighted that they can activate vivid emotional recollections, reminding us of shared moments of joy, support, and connection. “This not only lifts our mood but also strengthens our sense of identity and belonging,” said Sethi.

Additionally, sentimental objects often act as symbols of hope and resilience. “When people carry reminders of their family, it’s a way of telling themselves that they’re part of a larger narrative—that they’re loved and supported, even when they might feel disconnected,” Sethi shared.

Ultimately, these small, tangible items do more than hold memories—they are powerful psychological tools. Whether it’s a photo, a piece of jewelry, or another cherished item, such keepsakes allow us to carry a piece of our loved ones with us, offering emotional support and a sense of security in a fast-moving world,” said Sethi.
