New day. New skincare trend. From skin flooding to glass skin, there seems to be a new trend every day. The latest buzzword in town is “glazed donut skin”. If you’re all things skincare, you must already be aware of this term, however, for those living under a rock, this term is being popularised by skincare enthusiasts like supermodel and Rhode Skin founder Hailey Bieber.

“My standard when I go to bed at night is if I’m not getting into bed looking like a glazed donut, then I’m not doing the right thing,” Bieber said in a YouTube video detailing her skincare routine.

But what is glazed donut skin exactly? According to Dr Akanksha Sanghvi, aesthetic dermatologist, founder – Oprava Aesthetics, glazed donut skin is a skin type that is plump, hydrated, pore-less and reflects light — almost like a shiny donut.

“The trend is popular among Korean skincare lovers, where shiny bouncy skin is achieved using the ‘layering technique’. This technique involves using skincare products right from cleanser to moisturiser in the right order and manner, which are generally a combination of skin actives like AHAs and BHAs like glycolic acid, lactic acid or vitamins like vitamin C and E, niacinamide and non-actives such as fruit water and hyaluronic acid — which are a calming and repairing in nature,” she said.

So, if you’re curious about how you can achieve glazed donut skin, we got the expert to break it down for you.

*Use a pH balanced cleanser in morning and at night which is rich in glycolic acid or lactic acid for subtle and gentle exfoliation without having to use scrubs.

*Next, top it with multi-action serums rich in AHA/BHA, botanical extracts, hyaluronic acid or vitamin C that help treat open pores and blemishes at the same time, thereby improving skin texture.

*Using an essence or serum rich in niacinamide or salicylic acid can help reduce acne inflammation, pigmentation, acne marks as well as hydrated the skin in individuals with acne-prone skin.

*Including a moisturiser with repairing and anti-aging properties, like a ceramide-based cream with hyaluronic acid, peptides and bakuchiol every night can help address aging skin and fine lines.

However, Dr Sanghvi advised to avoid harsh cleansers or scrubs that can rip the good oils off the skin care or can damage the skin barrier. “Moreover, avoid greasy products that can clod the pores or induce acne or comedones even in normal skin. Skin care products, makeup, and cosmetics in general can induce something called as acne cosmetica which is characterised by small bumps on cheeks and chin or forehead.”

Additionally, she recommended avoiding too many actives in a skin regime as it can irritate the skin, and the ingredients may clash by reducing or aggravating the action of some products causing more harm than good. “Do not over-exfoliate using too many acids or exfoliating pads which can lead to inflammation and dryness of the skin including breakouts or dermatitis. It is important to give rest days to your skin by exfoliating once or twice weekly (maximum) depending on the product and its content.”

Dr Sanghvi also noted that aesthetic treatments such as mesotherapy, infusion facials, laser toning and skin tightening with radio frequency can help achieve glazed donut skin, however, one must consult a dermatologist for personalised guidance and to determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific skin needs.
