Dhanteras 2023 Date and Time: Dhanteras, the auspicious festival, also known as Dhanatrayodashi marks the beginning of the five-day-long festivities of Diwali. On this day, as per tradition, people invest and buy gold and silver, in the form of jewellery and utensils. While ‘Dhan’ means wealth, ‘teras’ means the thirteenth day of the moon cycle.
It is also considered auspicious to purchase the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh on the day, who are worshipped on the occasion of Diwali.
This year, according to drikpanchang.com, Dhanteras will be celebrated with much fervour on November 10, which is a Friday. Dhanteras Puja Muhurat begins at 05:47 pm and ends at 07:43 pm with a puja duration of 1 hour 56 minutes.
Legend has it that Dhantrayodashi is the day when Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of the milk. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kubera who is the God of wealth, are worshipped on the Trayodashi, drikpanchang.com states. This is different from the Lakshmi Puja performed on Amavasya after two days of Dhantrayodashi.
Drikpanchang.com also mentions that Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras should be done during Pradosh Kaal which starts after sunset and approximately lasts for two hours and 24 minutes.
“The best time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras is during Pradosh Kaal when Sthir Lagna prevails. Sthir means fixed i.e. not moveable. If Dhanteras Puja is done during Sthir Lagna, Lakshmiji will stay in your home; hence this time is the best for Dhanteras Pujan. Vrishabha Lagna is considered as Sthir and mostly overlaps with Pradosh Kaal during Diwali festivity,” according to Drik Panchang.
It is also considered that on the day, King Hima’s 16-year-old son was to die on the fourth night of his marriage as a result of a snake bite. To save his life, his wife collected all her gold ornaments and gold coins. She then sang songs and narrated stories to her husband so he doesn’t fall asleep and could be saved. When Yamaraj, the god of death, came in the form of a serpent to take the prince’s life, he was blinded by the shine of the gold and sat enchanted listening to the melodious music and stories and as a result, the king’s life was saved. As a result, Yamadeep is another ritual on the day when a lamp for the God of death is lit outside home to ward off any untimely death of any family members.
Interestingly, the day of Dhanteras is also observed as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda.
