Headaches can ruin the quality of your life if left unchecked for a while. One of the most common ailments that any practicing physician comes across, unfortunately, they happen to be more common in women as compared to men.

According to Dr Manisha Mishra Goswami, MD (Ayurveda), Founder, Svahita Ayurveda Clinic, Versova, Mumbai, any kind of disease or ailment including headache in an individual is a sign of imbalance in the fundamental bio energies of vata, pitta and kapha and the solution lies in getting them back in balance,” she added.

Dr Manisha said that the first step is identifying your triggers and making amendments. Eating home cooked meals and staying away from alcohol, smoking and excess oily and fried foods is a must.

When do headaches become red flags?

According to Dr Rajeev Gupta, Director of Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, exposure to extreme heat or environmental stressors can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, both well-known culprits for headaches. “While mild headaches here and there are not causes of concern, experiencing headaches every day is. It suggests that your body is constantly under stress, potentially leading to chronic ailments, electrolyte imbalances, and even vascular changes in the brain,” he said.

“As our bodies lose fluids through sweating, it disrupts the delicate balance of electrolytes crucial for various functions, including brain function. This disruption can manifest as a throbbing headache,” he explained.

Heat and stress doesn’t just affect hydration; it can also impact your blood vessels. Dr Gupta explains that heat can cause dilation of blood vessels in the brain, contributing to headache symptoms. Imagine your brain like a complex network of pipes. When these pipes expand excessively due to heat, it can lead to pain.
