Did you know that people with epilepsy are not issued a driver’s license? According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, individuals diagnosed with epilepsy are often unable to fully control their motor functions, which increases the risk of traffic accidents and endangers both their safety and that of others on the road. To understand more about this restriction, indianexpress.com consulted a health expert.

“The issuance of driver’s license to those with epilepsy isn’t permitted as it can lead to unpredictable seizures, which may occur without warning and can significantly impair a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Regulatory authorities prioritize public safety and, as such, may require individuals with a history of seizures to demonstrate a period of seizure control, typically through medical documentation, before being considered eligible for a driver’s license,” explained Dr Keni Ravish Rajiv, senior consultant, neurology and head of epilepsy services, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru.

Dr Rajiv also said that epilepsy patients should consult their healthcare providers to assess their condition and receive personalised advice, as driving can pose significant risks not only to the driver but also to other road users. “When considering individuals with neurological disorders who are driving, it is essential to be aware of specific guidelines and precautions such as regular medical evaluations to assess your ability to operate a vehicle safely, as well as ability to follow recommendations provided by healthcare professionals regarding driving restrictions or modifications,” he said.

According to Dr Rajiv, people with neurological conditions should be educated about the potential impact of their symptoms on driving performance, such as issues with coordination, reaction time, or cognitive function. Implementing these measures can help mitigate risks and promote safer driving practices for those affected by neurological disorders.
