Searing temperatures and relentless sunshine – that’s the hallmark of a heatwave. While we know to crank up the AC, guzzle water, and slather on sunscreen, one crucial part of our body often gets neglected: our eyes.

Dr Puneet Jain, a senior consultant ophthalmologist at Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, sheds light on why your eyes might be feeling the heat more than you realise, and how to keep them safe during these scorching periods. So, ditch the squinting and itchy eyes – here’s how to beat the heatwave and keep your vision cool and clear!

Why are eyes vulnerable during heatwaves?

While your eyes may not be the “worst affected” organ during a heatwave, they certainly feel the impact. The combination of high temperatures and dry air disrupts tear production, leading to dry, irritated eyes, said Dr Jain.

Intense sunlight adds another layer of stress, causing glare and eye strain. Increased outdoor activities like swimming can further irritate your eyes with chlorine and other chemicals.

Eyes often get overlooked during heat protection

Many people prioritise hydration, sunscreen, and protective clothing during heat waves, but eye care often falls by the wayside. This neglect can have serious consequences, warned Dr Jain. UV exposure, especially intense during a heatwave, can cause immediate discomfort like photokeratitis (corneal sunburn) and long-term problems like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Dry and hot conditions worsen dry eye syndrome, leading to significant discomfort and potential damage if left untreated.

Keeping your eyes cool and protected

Sunglasses are Essential: Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays. This shields your eyes from harmful radiation and reduces glare, preventing discomfort and damage.

Hats for the Win: Broad-brimmed hats offer additional protection by blocking direct sunlight from reaching your eyes.

Hydration is Key: Drinking plenty of fluids helps maintain tear production, keeping your eyes lubricated and comfortable.

Artificial Tears for Dry Eyes: If you suffer from dry eyes, consider using artificial lubricating eye drops after consulting with an ophthalmologist.

Seek Shade During Peak Sun Hours: Minimise exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when UV radiation is strongest.

Beat the Dry Air: Indoor air can become dry during heatwaves. Using a humidifier can help maintain comfortable moisture levels for your eyes.

Schedule Regular Eye Check-Ups: Regular eye exams can detect early signs of damage and ensure you’re taking appropriate protective measures.

By incorporating these simple steps into your heatwave routine, you can keep your eyes cool, comfortable, and protected throughout the scorching summer months.
