Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine that originates from India, stresses the balance and harmony of the mind, body, and spirit for overall health and well-being. As such, according to experts, incorporating certain Ayurvedic lifestyle changes into your daily routine can have a “transformative effect on your physical, mental, and emotional health”. This is why, many people swear by specific Ayurvedic rituals — whether it is for physical, mental, skin, hair, or dental health.

To help you make the right start, Dr Lakshmi Varma K, Consultant & Advisor at LYEF Wellness, shared seven Ayurvedic lifestyle changes, which she said: “can help transform you”. “Incorporating these Ayurvedic lifestyle changes into your daily routine can lead to transformative results, promoting holistic health and well-being at all levels – physical, mental, and emotional,” she told indianexpress.com.

Follow a consistent daily routine (Dinacharya): Ayurveda emphasises the importance of maintaining a consistent daily routine to align with the natural rhythms of the day. This includes waking up early in the morning, practising mindfulness or meditation, and eating meals at regular times. Following a consistent daily routine can help regulate your body’s internal clock, improve digestion, and promote overall well-being.

Eat a wholesome, balanced diet (Ahara): Ayurveda places a strong emphasis on the quality and quantity of food you consume. Opt for fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced foods that are compatible with your body type (dosha). Avoid processed foods, excess sugar, and heavy, greasy foods. Eating a wholesome, balanced diet can nourish your body, boost your immunity, and support optimal digestion.

Practice mindful eating: Mindful eating is a key practice in Ayurveda that involves being fully present while eating, without any distractions. Chew your food thoroughly, savour the flavours, and eat slowly. Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Mindful eating can improve digestion, prevent overeating, and enhance your relationship with food.

Engage in regular exercise (Vyayama): Physical activity is crucial for maintaining good health, according to Ayurveda. Find an exercise routine that suits your body type and lifestyle, whether it’s yoga, walking, swimming, or any other form of physical activity. Regular exercise can improve circulation, strengthen muscles, boost metabolism, and support overall vitality.

Get adequate restful sleep (Nidra): Ayurveda also emphasises the importance of getting enough restful sleep for optimal health. Establish a regular sleep routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath, avoiding screens before bed, and practising relaxation techniques. A good night’s sleep can rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit.

Manage stress (Pranayama and Dhyana): Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on your health. Ayurveda recommends practising pranayama (breathing exercises) and dhyana (meditation) to manage stress and promote relaxation. Deep breathing, alternate nostril breathing, and mindfulness meditation are effective techniques that can help reduce stress, calm the mind, and improve overall well-being.

Cultivate positive relationships and emotional well-being: According to Ayurveda, emotional well-being is essential for good health. Cultivate positive relationships, spend time with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Practice self-care, such as self-compassion, self-reflection, and self-love. Cultivating positive emotions and healthy relationships can enhance your mental and emotional well-being, which in turn positively impacts your physical health.

In a similar vein, Dr Vaishali, an Ayurveda expert, also shared a post about Ayurvedic lifestyle changes that one must try to incorporate in their life.

She recommends:

1) Living with the sun

According to the expert, one must time their daily activities in accordance with the sun. “This helps set our biological clock,” the expert noted.

2) Waking up early (at Brahma muhurat)

You may not be a morning person but waking up early does have its benefits. Dr Vaishali wrote, “Waking up early can literally shape your physical and mental health. Our brain works most efficiently during this time and many scientific studies prove the same.”

3) Tongue Scraping

“It’s very important to remove that white layered gunk above the tongue after brushing your teeth. Good digestion starts with healthy oral health,” she noted.

4) Eating 70 per cent of your appetite

“This can literally change your digestion game.” she said, adding that overeating is a big no-no.

5) Following the 80-20 rule

When making changes (especially, adopting a new habit), it should not be sudden. This is known as ‘padanshik krama’, and is a “great way to ensure balance and harmony in your life.”
