Winter brings with it a variety of health challenges, from sluggish digestion to seasonal colds. Adding raw cardamom water to your daily routine could be the simple remedy your body needs.
Known for its detoxifying and digestive properties, cardamom has been a staple in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, helping to boost metabolism and improve overall well-being. But how exactly does it benefit your body, and is it suitable for everyone?
Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator, tells indianexpress.com, “Consuming raw cardamom water during the winter offers several health benefits. Cardamom is known to enhance digestion by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes, and alleviating bloating and gas, which are common during the winter months due to heavy meals.”
She continues, “Its expectorant properties help clear mucus and soothe respiratory issues like colds and coughs, making it particularly beneficial in colder weather. Cardamom promotes blood circulation, helping to warm the body and combat cold extremities, which is essential in winter. Additionally, its diuretic effects assist in detoxification, supporting overall health during this season.”
Malhotra stresses, “Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, ranging from mild skin irritations to severe responses like anaphylaxis, though these are rare. Excessive consumption can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, including heartburn, diarrhea, and nausea.”
While cardamom may lower blood pressure in some, she cautioned that it could adversely affect individuals with already low blood pressure. Additionally, it may interact with medications such as anticoagulants and antidiabetic drugs, necessitating consultation with a healthcare professional before regular consumption.
Malhotra informs, “To maximise the health benefits of raw cardamom water, the best preparation method involves soaking the pods overnight. Start by crushing 1-2 green cardamom pods to release their essential oils and flavor. Place the crushed pods in a glass of water (approximately 250 ml) and let it steep overnight at room temperature. In the morning, strain the water to remove the pods and consume it on an empty stomach.”
She adds that this method enhances the extraction of cardamom’s beneficial compounds, such as antioxidants and essential oils, which support digestion, boost metabolism, and promote detoxification. “Additionally, drinking warm cardamom water can further aid in digestion and circulation, especially beneficial during colder months.”
