In a first, the Karnataka government has announced reservation for ‘male third gender’ in state armed police forces.
In a recent notification, the state government has invited applications to fill 3,484 constable posts in Karnataka Armed Police Forces, of which 79 posts have been reserved for the ‘male third gender’.
Home Minister Araga Jnanendra Tuesday said: “Of the total vacancies, 420 posts have been reserved for candidates from ‘Kalyana Karnataka’ region or the erstwhile Hyderabad-Karnataka region, with 11 of them for the ‘male third gender’ and for rest of Karnataka where 3,064 posts are open, 68 is reserved for ‘male transgender.’
Hailing the decision, transgender activist Akkai Padmashali said that it will help bring the third gender to the mainstream. Speaking to media persons in Bengaluru Tuesday, she said: “There is nothing called ‘male third gender’; but from what I understand is that the government might be referring to ‘female to male transformed transgender man.’”
She further said many transgender persons are school dropouts and urged the government to conduct a survey to understand the community’s social and financial status. She also requested the government to set up a board for the wellbeing of transgender persons.
The recruitment drive to fill up constable posts will end on October 31.
