Two persons were detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi infiltrators at Teliamura in Khowai district of Tripura on Monday.

According to locals, two unknown persons, who introduced themselves as residents of Assam, came to collect subscriptions for madrasas.

“But they could not show any valid receipts. We also asked them to show their documents, but they could not show anything. We suspected they came from Bangladesh. We informed the police, and they detained them,” added a local.

One of the suspects told media persons, “Five of us came to Agartala four to five days ago. We came here (Teliamura) for work related to a madrasa. Three of them went to the other side, and we visited a house here. When we came out of that house, they (some locals) called us to show us documents. We have photocopies of our documents with us, and we showed them the same as the originals are in Agartala.”

The police are yet to respond to media queries on the issue.

Tripura shares an 856 km-long international border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced due to local disputes.
