Schools in Haryana to remain closed on May 7, 8 over thunderstorm warning

A spokesman of the Department said that there is no need to panic and that people should follow the precautions suggested by the Department. All departments have been directed to stay alert, he added.

In view of the Met department issuing a warning of thunderstorm and rain between May 7 and 8, the Haryana government has decided that all government and private schools in the state will remain closed on two days.

This was announced by the Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma, here on Sunday. Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Department has also issued advisory in public interest in view of possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms or dust storms on May 7 and 8. The department has suggested safety tips to be adopted in case of thunderstorms, dust storms and squall.

A spokesman for the department said that there was no need to panic and people should follow precautions suggested by the department, and pay special attention to children and senior citizens. All departments have been directed to stay alert, he added.

He said that people should prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival. They should secure their houses, carry out repairs and not leave sharp objects outside, said the spokesperson, adding that people must keep a track of news for weather updates and warnings.

During heavy rain and thunderstorms, people have been told not to panic and try to stay indoors. People have been further advised to unplug all electrical equipment and use corded telephones. Further, according to the department, people should not take shelter near or under trees, and also stay away from power and telephone lines.

The spokesperson said that in case of a storm, people outside must stay away from fallen trees or power lines and report them to nearest tehsil or district headquarters immediately.
