Harassed by police,college girl commits suicide

Allegedly harassed by local police over her sitting at a tea stall,a college girl has committed suicide by jumping into Chenab river in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Though the body of Rashida Bano,a B.Ed student,is yet to be recovered,she is feared drowned and the body carried away by the river.

The incident has left the police red-faced; an officer has been suspended and further probe has been ordered into the matter.

Rashida,a girl in her 20s,jumped into river Chinab yesterday after being questioned by the police for sitting under “suspicious circumstances” at a tea stall at Pul-Doda last evening,Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Doda-Kishtiwar-Ramban range,Maneesh Sinha told PTI.

Bano was having tea with colleague Najab Din at a tea stall on the bank of Chenab in Pul Doda town,some 165 km from Jammu when the incident took place.

We have suspended police post in-charge Pul-Doda Mumtaz Hussain,the DIG said.

The incident led to protests by local people against what they called the “Talibanisation” of state police.

The deceased’s father Abdul Rafeeq has alleged that police harassment led to his daughter’s death. Locals say policemen harassed the girl and thrashed the boy.
