Reiterating the farmers’ resolve to continue with their agitation, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to create a rift among farmers.
“It took one year for us to make them (government) understand that the laws you brought are not good for poor farmers, labourers, and others. We said things in our language, but those sitting in bungalows in Delhi had another language… They decided to withdraw the law but tried to divide the farmers by saying that they failed to make some people understand the laws,” Tikait said at a kisan mahapanchayat in Lucknow, referring to Modi’s apology while announcing the decision on Friday.
Farmers from Punjab and Haryana also attended the mahapanchayat organised by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM).
“There are many more farmers’ issues that the government needs to look into,” said Tikait, pointing to the demand for a law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP). “Our struggle will continue because our issues are not limited to the repeal of the three farm laws. The government should talk to us to resolve these issues. We are not going anywhere. We will hold meetings all over the country and make people aware,” he said.
The PM should give an answer on the MSP demand that he had supported as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2011, Tikait said. He said Modi was part of a committee that had suggested to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that a law guaranteeing MSP was required. “The report of this committee is lying in the PMO. There is no need for a new committee… You implement your own committee report,” Tikait said.
He also reiterated the demand for sacking Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, whose son has been arrested in connection with the death of four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri.
