Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena’s snooping and phone tapping allegations against his own government have stirred up a storm in the state, with Opposition Congress demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.
This comes after an undated video of Meena making the allegations at a temple in Jaipur went viral. Meena purportedly made the accusation while speaking about alleged corruption in the state. The allegation has given ammunition to Opposition leaders such as Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra and former CM Ashok Gehlot, who are now demanding Sharma’s resignation.
“Leaders of BJP are accusing their own party of phone tapping. Kirodi is directly accusing the chief minister of Rajasthan. Until the chief minister answers in the House, we won’t let the proceedings begin,” Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully told the House.
The Rajasthan government has rejected the allegations.
In the video — said to be recent — Meena is heard saying: “I was hoping that things would change and that when we come to power, we will crack down on the corrupt. The protests I did in the previous government and because of which you supported us and we formed the government — work was not done on those issues.”
He said he raised issues of corruption, including of the 2021 sub-inspector exam paper leak, with the present government.
“Maine jab kaha ke woh pareeksha radd karo, toh sarkar ne meri baat nahi maani. Ulta sarkar ki taraf se — jaisa pichle raj main hua karta tha — chappe chappe par mere liye CID lagai jaati hai aur mera telephone bhi record kiya jaata hai. (When I said cancel that examination, the government didn’t listen to me. On the contrary, the government — as it used to be during the previous rule — deputed CID (personnel) for me at every nook and corner and my telephone is also recorded).”
Meena has been in a constant tussle with the state government, and the party, with the friction first surfacing around the formation of the BJP government in December 2023.
