The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved two major infrastructure projects for Bihar ahead of the imminent Assembly elections in the state.
The 104-km Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya single railway line will be doubled at a cost of Rs 2,192 crore along with the construction of a four-lane 79-km Sahebganj-Bettiah section of National Highway 139W at a cost of Rs 3,822 crore.
The Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya line is over-saturated and there were frequent demands of its doubling so that more trains can be run on the route. The 104-km line connects key destinations in Bihar such as Rajgir, Nalanda, Pawapuri and Bihar Sharif. Since Bakhtiyarpur lies on the Patna line, the doubling will facilitate the faster passenger train towards the state capital.
Railway officials said the project will increase the additional freight traffic of fertilizers, coal, cement, clinkers, to name a few, by 26 million tonnes per annum.
The of Sahebganj-Areraj-Bettiah section of the NH-139W will improve the connectivity between Patna to Bettiah, while connecting North Bihar districts such as Vaishali, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran and West Champaran.
The Patna-Bettiah corridor is part of Bharatmala Pariyojna and notified as NH-139W. This national highway is expected to provide high-speed connectivity to alternate routes in Bihar, which are presently congested and geometrically deficient and pass through built-up areas. An 11-km stretch on the corridor from AIIMS to Digha is complete. The 38.81-km Bakarpur-Manikpur stretch is under construction and the 44.65-km Manikpur-Sahebganj project has been awarded.
Officials said the widening of the Sahebganj-Bettiah section will have a design speed of 100 kmph and will support average vehicle speed of 80kmph. This will reduce the overall travel time between Sahebganj and Bettiah by 60 per cent, from 2.5 hours to 1 hours, compared to existing alternatives.
