Metro rail network in India: India’s metro rail network has surpassed 1000 km, becoming the third largest in the world. It is also on the track to become the second largest metro network globally. The metro systems has transformed urban transportation in the country. Millions of people rely on metro rail network for quick, easy and affordable travel.

In recent years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has undertaken giant leap in enhancing metro rail network in the country. From under-river (below Hooghly River in Kolkata) tunnels to driverless trains (Delhi Metro) and water metros (Kochi), India is setting new standards in modern urban mobility.

What is the operational length of metro rail network in India?

Presently, the total operational metro rail network including RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) is about 1036 km. This urban mode of transport system is available across 24 cities.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Tokhan Sahu, MoS, MoHUA said that the government operationalised 339 km of metro network in the country in the last five years.

“In the last five years including 2025-26, 339 kilometres of metro network has become operational across the country, with 34.65 kilometres of metro network becoming operational in Karnataka,” he said.

The union minister further added that the metro rail projects are implemented with state of art energy efficient technology including deployment of rolling stock with regenerative braking system.

“Such deployment of energy efficient systems is resulting in huge power savings. Solar power panels are also installed by Metro companies that help in reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions. These steps contribute significantly in making metro projects efficient, sustainable and environment friendly,” Sahu added.
