NIA and police arrest suspected human trafficker in Tripura’s Sepahijala district

The National Investigation Agency has sought Hannan Miah’s transit remand and plans to take him to Guwahati for questioning.

A team of the National Investigation Agency and police arrested a suspected human trafficker from the Rastarmatha area in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Sunday.

The accused was identified as Hannan Miah, a resident of the Matinagar area of the district.

Speaking to reporters, Bishalgarh police station in-charge Rana Chatterjee said, “Hannan was a most-wanted criminal in a case of human trafficking registered with the NIA in 2023.”

Chatterjee added that Hannan was arrested on the NIA’s request and later handed over to a team from the central agency.

The agency has sought Hannan’s transit remand and plans to take him to Guwahati for questioning.

Based on digital surveillance and tracking, the NIA and the BSF arrested 29 touts in November and December last year. Five people accused of involvement in human trafficking were arrested in different parts of Tripura in that operation.

As part of busting human trafficking support networks, the NIA arrested 44 people—21 from Tripura, 10 from Karnataka, five from Assam, three from West Bengal, two from Tamil Nadu and one each from Haryana, Telangana and Puducherry—last year.

The arrests were part of a human trafficking case lodged by the NIA in Guwahati in October last year.
