Former Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi fell ill earlier this month after developing a fever due to urinary tract infection. The leader was being monitored by a team of doctors at his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai before being admitted to hospital on Friday night.
The last medical bulletin released by Kauvery Hospital, where he is currently being treated, stated, “DMK President and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi was admitted on 28/07/2018 with drop in blood pressure. He was resuscitated and stabilized in the ICU and managed by a team of doctors and nurses. There was a setback on his clinical condition on 29/07/2018 due to difficulty in breathing. He responded well to medical management and his vital signs have gradually normalised.
"Although there has been resolution of the condition which led to his hospital admission, extended period of hospitalization will be necessary due to age related overall decline in his general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters. He continues to maintain his vital signs with active medical support," it added.

After the hospital bulletin was released close to 10pm, the relieved crowd, nonetheless did not disperse, leading to tense moments with police resorting to mild lathicharge. Meanwhile, as members of the family started leaving the hospital, they were thronged by followers and media persons.
The anxious cadres were heard chanting “elunthu va” (rise and come) and praying for their leader. With the strength of the crowd greater than on previous days, police security was beefed up with an IPS officer manning the entrance of the hospital and allowing very few people inside on Sunday evening.
On Sunday, senior DMK leader A Raja repeated the hospital statement and requested that the public and party supporters ignore all rumours about Karunanidhi’s health condition. Karunanidhi has not been keeping well since October 2016 and recently had undergone a procedure to change his tracheostomy tube, to help him breathe. A massive sea of supporters has gathered outside the Kauvery Hospital where Karunanidhi is undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, son M K Stalin has left for his home. The DMK patriarch suffered a minor setback after which his vital signs have once again started normalising.
Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswami is expected to arrive in Chennai at midnight, following which he will visit the ailing DMK chief in the hospital.
Addressing the media outside the hospital, DMK's east district unit in-charge A Raja said, "Kalaignar's health suffered a temporary setback, but he is now stable after medical support. Please do not believe rumours."
Besides VP Naidu, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, BJP leader Muralidhar Rao and the party’s Tamil Nadu unit party president Tamilisai Soundararajan also visited the hospital. “I came here on behalf of the TMC and Mamata Banerjee. According to India Today Television, the leaves of the state police personnel have been cancelled. Also, all party cadres waiting outside the hospital have been asked to leave by the authorities.
Earlier in the day, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu visited the former CM at the hospital. “Visited Kauveri Hospital and met former Chief Minister Thiru Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Met his family members and doctors and enquired about his health. Doctors said he is stable. Wish him a speedy recovery,” Naidu tweeted after the visit.
According to reports, the former CM is experiencing trouble breathing normally.
According to India Today Television, former finance minister P Chidambaram also visited the DMK supremo at the hospital on Sunday.
According to The Times of India, former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa's niece J Deepa also visited Karunanidhi at Kauvery hospital.
According to NDTV, the condition of the former Tamil Nadu CM is critical. DMK leaders from across the state have also left for Chennai.
