K Sanjay Murthy assumes charge as new Comptroller and Auditor General of India

K Sanjay Murthy is a 1989-batch IAS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Monday.

K Sanjay Murthy assumed office as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on Thursday. A 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Murthy succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu, who demitted office on Wednesday.

Before he was appointed CAG, Murthy served as secretary, Department of Higher Education, in the Ministry of Education. He also served as additional secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; as CEO of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation; and as joint secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Before his tenure at the Centre, Murthy has served in the Himachal Pradesh government.

“He has wide experience in administrative, social, economic and infrastructure fields,” the CAG office said in a statement.

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Murthy as the new CAG on Monday.

In a notification, the Ministry of Finance said, “By virtue of the power vested in her by clause (1) of article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has been pleased to appoint Shri K. Sanjay Murthy to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

On Thursday morning, President Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to Murthy at a function in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After the oath ceremony, Murthy came to the CAG office, where he was welcomed by the senior officers of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department.
