The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided to expel Sangli Municipal Corporation mayor Idris Naikwadi from party.
Naikwadi, known for his maverick ways, had crossed swords with senior NCP minister Jayant Patil over functioning of civic body. He was recently under scanner for ostentatious display of wealth during his sons wedding a fortnight ago. He had reportedly fed over 40,000 guests in massive feast in spite of NCP president Sharad Pawar asking partymen to refrain from such extravagance when state was facing a severe drought.
Naikwadis expulsion is also being blamed on his insubordination and attempts to join hands with Congress and BJP to increase his clout in civic body. The NCP and affiliates have 33 seats in the 62-seat Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation. Patil,MLA from Islampur in Sangli, had decided to install Naikwadi as mayor, but relations soured between two after Naikwadi defied Patil to join hands with Congress and BJP to prevent candidates selected by Patil from winning elections to the post of standing committee chairman and leader of the house.
After that,Naikwadi was removed from post of NCP city president in October.
The mayor has increasingly been indulging in anti-party activities. He joined hands with the Congress and the BJP because of which the party is getting a bad name. It is for his insubordination and indiscipline that we have decided to expel him, NCP Sangli district president Dinkar Patil said.
