An indefinite total bandh demanding better roads and electricity supply continued for the third day in Mizoram’s southern Lawngtlai district.
The bandh, enforced even during the night but which was partially lifted for a few hours on Thursday morning to allow residents to purchase basic necessities, is being organised by the Young Lai Association, an apex community-based organisation of the Lai tribe that dominates the region.
The YLA has said it will not lift the bandh unless it receives an assurance from the state government that their demands will be met. These include repair work on NH-54, re-routing of a planned World Bank funded road project through the main Lawgtlai town instead of around it, and the setting up of a Sub-Division of the Power and Electricity Department.
The Mizoram Board of School Education has meanwhile said it will not organize a separate examination for higher secondary students who are scheduled to begin their final exams from Friday, and that those who are unable to take the exams will have to sit for it in the next academic year.
There had been no official statement from the YLA on the issue by the time of filing this report.
