A day after Akhil Gupta, the second prime witness and cook-cum-personal aide of self-styled godman Asaram, was found murdered in Muzaffarnagar (UP), the Surat district police have beefed up the security of two Surat sisters, the complainants in the case. Gupta was shot dead by unidentified assailants when he was returning home. He had testified against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai before the Gandhinagar court.
Incidentally, Amrut Prajapati, a former close aide of Asaram Bapu, was murdered by unidentified persons at his clinic in Rajkot on May 23 last year. The accused, believed to be followers of Asaram, had fired at Prajapati.
After the murder of Gupta, Surat police rechecked the security arrangements provided to the complainants and their family members as well as the prime witnesses in the case. Highly reliable sources said that among 150 witnesses, few of them were in Surat. The remaining witnesses are in north Gujarat and other states, like Maharashtra, UP and MP. DCP Zone IV, Shobha Bhutada, said, “We have given security to all the prime witnesses and family members of the complainants in the Narayan Sai rape case.”
