The Centre Monday told the Supreme Court that there is “no truth” in the allegations of former Special Prosecutor in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case that she was asked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to “go soft” on the accused.
“The main allegation is that the prosecutor was asked to go soft. I have examined the papers. There is no truth in it,” Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Ministry of Home Affairs and the NIA, told a bench led by Justice J Chelameswar.

Rohatgi then sought a week’s time to file a formal response on behalf of the MHA and the agency to a batch of PILs, which have asked for a direction to the Centre to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct a fair trial and constitute a special investigating team of the CBI to probe NIA officials who allegedly pressured Salian.
The bench granted the time and fixed the matter for hearing next on October 12.
Reacting to the NIA rejecting the allegations against them, Rohini Salian told The Indian Express that this has been the NIA’s stance right from the beginning and she would not like to comment further on the matter since it is sub-judice.
“The NIA has been denying this right from the beginning; what else can they say? I will wait for the court’s decision on this before I consider what is to be done next. I would like to hear what the SC decides,” she said.
