The Indian summer pretty much decided Bollywood’s dress code at the charity gala organised as part of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Mumbai itinerary. Dressed in whites and beiges, actors like Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, among others, set the tone for the evening.
However, it was, eventually, Kate Middleton, accompanied by husband William, who stole the show. In her sequinned blue-sleeved dress, the Duchess of Cambridge stood out in the crowd as the couple took to the red carpet.
The royal couple were the guests of honour at the charity gala meant to raise funds for the three NGOs that were part of the event at the Oval Maidan in the morning. Held at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the evening of glamour and entertainment was also a means to introduce William and Kate to some of the prominent Indians from across fields.
Among those who attended were industrialists Rahul Bajaj, Kumar Mangalam Birla and the Poonawalas; cricketer Sachin Tendulkar with wife Anjali; RBI chief Raghuram Rajan; writers Anil Dharker and Shobhaa De; and socialite Sheetal Mafatlal.
Bollywood, however, formed a large part of the contingent. In attendance were actors Madhuri Dixit Nene, Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor and nephew Arjun Kapoor, Huma Qureshi and Jacqueline Fernandez, director Karan Johar, and others.
Once the royal couple arrived at the venue, select Bollywood celebrities, including Khan, Rai Bachchan, Dixit Nene and Akhtar were introduced to them. The couple then reportedly walked through around the ballroom and was introduced to some of the other guests.
The meet-and-greet was followed by an hour-long entertainment programme, following which Kate and William retired to their suite. On Monday, after an event where they will engage with young Indian entrepreneurs, the couple will fly to New Delhi, the next stop of their India visit.
