The Goa Police Tuesday night apprehended a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi for his alleged role in the murder of a renowned cloth merchant in Punjab.
Sanjeev Verma, a businessman popularly known as the ‘Kurta Pajama King’, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants outside his showroom in Abohar in Punjab’s Fazilka district on July 7. Hours after the murder, one Aarzoo Bishnoi had claimed responsibility for the murder through a social media post written in Hindi. The post read, “We, Goldy Dhillon, Aarzoo Bishnoi, and Shubham Lonker from Maharashtra, take responsibility for the murder… We had called him regarding a matter, but he refused to recognise us, so we shot him dead to make it clear who we are. He used to support our enemies – whoever goes against us will be crushed to dust. Whatever we do, we take full responsibility”.
In a statement on Wednesday, Goa Police said they received information from their Punjab counterpart about the accused, identified as Vishnu Bishnoi (32) – a native of Jodhpur in Rajasthan – hiding in Goa. Police said Vishnu has at least seven cases lodged against him and had been wanted by Punjab Police in Verma’s murder case.
A special team of 20 personnel of Mapusa sub-division was formed, under the directions of SP Crime Rahul Gupta and under the supervision of DIG Range Varsha Sharma.
“He was found hiding in a hotel under the jurisdiction of Anjuna police station along with six friends. It was a swift and well-planned operation. The custody of Vishnu Bishnoi was handed over to Punjab state crime police, while his six associates have been bound over, since their involvement was not found in the above case,” said SP Rahul Gupta.
