‘Deeply saddening’: Parties condole Karur stampede deaths, ask cadres to extend help

As Tamil actor-politician Vijay’s rally witnessed a stampede in Karur, killing at least 35 people and leaving dozens injured, condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi wishing strength to families of the victims.

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” said PM Modi.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the loss of innocent lives is truly heartbreaking. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi urged Congress workers and leaders to extend every possible support to the victims and their families.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he was “deeply distressed by the unfortunate and tragic stampede”. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” he said. Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also urged all Congress workers in the region to promptly assist the injured and support the families and authorities in relief efforts.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed concern over people suddenly taking ill due to a stampede-like situation at the crowded TVK rally. “The news from Karur is worrying,” he said. “I have contacted former Minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Health Minister @Subramanian_Ma and the District Collector to provide immediate support to the civilians who fainted due to the crowd and have been admitted to the hospital,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.

The government also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the victims. Stalin also instructed School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi from the nearby Tiruchirappalli district to provide necessary assistance to the injured on a war footing.
