Darjeeling landslide: President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have expressed grief over the loss of lives caused by heavy rains and landslides in North Bengal. The incessant downpours triggered multiple landslides across Darjeeling hills, leaving over 12 people dead and several others missing.
Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu said that the tragic loss of lives due to heavy rain and landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling is distressing and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
“The tragic loss of lives due to heavy rain and landslides in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is distressing. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of rescue and relief operations and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Murmu said.
PM Modi said that the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored. He also asserted that his government is committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected.

The situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored in the wake of heavy rains and landslides. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed, with more troops on standby if needed. He also spoke to Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and took stock of the situation there.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in Darjeeling due to heavy rains. My thoughts are with the people who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Shah said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced compensation for the victims without specifying the amount and said she would visit north Bengal on October 6 to assess the situation in the region, where a large number of tourists have also been affected.
