Orissa: Former IPS sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment

A former IPS officer was today sentenced three years rigorous imprisonment and slapped with a penalty of Rs 2 lakh after being convicted in a disproportionate asset case by a special vigilance court here,which later granted him bail.

Baidyanath Jena,a retired IPS officer,was promoted to the IPS cadre in 1985.

A raid was conducted at his official residence here in May 1990 by the vigilance sleuths and disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 3.78 lakh was found.

Special vigilance judge A B S Naidu held the officer,who had retired in May 2000,guilty. However,Jena was later granted bail by the same court.
