Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra attacked by BJP workers in Assam, claims Congress

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has entered the third day and is passing through Assam. Its route for Saturday includes passing through Lakhimpur district before entering Arunachal Pradesh ahead of halting for the night at a village near Itanagar.

The Congress Saturday alleged that workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tore its posters and banners and vandalised vehicles in Lakhimpur town when the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra was passing through Assam.

The party has released a 54-second video purportedly showing a street in a town at night. The people can be heard shouting “Jai Shri Ram” while a man wielding a stick is seen tearing posters attached to pillars. The clip further shows another man pulling down a hoarding bearing the photograph of Rahul Gandhi and two other Congress leaders.

The Assam Police, however, has junked the claims of attack on the Congress yatra.

The Assam unit of the Congress took to Twitter and said, “Rahul Gandhi ji’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra drawing thousands of cheering people in Assam has made the Himanta Biswa Sarma regime restless. While CM is trying to derail the yatra by even threatening arrests, his followers are tearing off posters and banners of the yatra.”

In the afternoon, the Assam Congress shared another video of two vehicles – a mini-truck carrying Congress flags and a car – both with damage to their windshields.

Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saika told The Indian Express that Assam Youth Congress workers were putting up posters and engaging in publicity works in Lakhimpur when the vehicles were damaged by the miscreants.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also lashed out at the BJP over the alleged attacks. In a post on Twitter, Kharge said, “We strongly condemn the shameful attack on the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra vehicles and tearing of Congress party’s banners and posters by the BJP goons in Lakhimpur, Assam. In the last 10 years, BJP has attempted to trample and demolish every right and justice guaranteed by the Constitution to the people of India. It wants to subjugate their voices, thereby hijacking democracy. Congress party will not be cowed down by this tactic of attack and intimidation employed by the BJP government in Assam, which is responsible for this. Congress party will take appropriate legal action against these BJP stooges.”

Reacting to the allegation, Assam DGP GP Singh said in a post on X, “Dear Sir, there has been no targeting of any vehicle of any political party, less so of the Yatra. Assam Police has made elaborate arrangements for security and L&O for the Yatra throughout the state. The Yatra has peacefully entered Arunachal Pradesh after first leg in Assam.”

Till the time of the filing the report, the Congress did not share any information on whether they are filing a police complaint on this matter.
