Test movie review: Madhavan-Nayanthara-Siddharth film fails to do justice to its cast

Test movie review: The film stars some of the best actors working in the Tamil film industry today -- Nayanthara, Madhavan, Siddharth and Meera Jasmine -- but this convoluted and disappointing film has little to offer.

A cricketer in search of his lost mojo. A scientist in search of his, something he hasn’t found yet. And two women in search of a film that could have made better use of the men, and, as a corollary, themselves. That, in a nutshell, is what Test, a Tamil language film on Netflix, is about.

No, wait. There is a plot, too. Arjun (Siddharth) is on the verge of regaining his form for a crucial India-Pakistan match to be played on the historic Chepauk ground: when has an India-Pak match not been crucial? Adi, his young cricket-mad school-going son, is desperate to get his daddy out of the doldrums; so is his mum, and Arjun’s long-suffering wife (Meera Jasmine).

Long-suffering wives is a recurrent theme in the film, as we learn about Kumudha’s (Nayanthara) rocky journey to be a mother, something that her ‘double-doctorate from MIT, not Manipal but Massachusetts’ spouse Sarvannan (Madhavan) seems not as committed to.

There is history between Arjun and Kumudha, which becomes the bridge between the two couples, and the troubles they find themselves in, involving valuable property and goons and cricket-betting and matka-playing.

Somewhere hidden in the middle of this convoluted enterprise is the film that must have been envisaged. Siddharth is constantly made to look glum, yelling at his wife and son; Jasmine doesn’t have much to do, except in one break-out scene when she takes control. Madhavan looks as if he’s coming off the sets of Shaitaan, but is stumped by a role which requires him to be the owner of a canteen (huh?), and the futuristic originator of a cracking idea which will change the nature of fuel consumption.

Nayanthara, clad in the most gorgeous saris, comes off better than the others, but that’s not compensation enough in this disappointing film, which does scant justice to some of the most talented actors in the Tamil film industry.
