NEET UG 2023: Planning to study MBBS from Nepal? Check eligibility, admission process, fees

NEET UG 2023: With Nepal being one of the closest neighbours of India, it is coming up as a preferred choice for medical students to pursue MBBS. Check all the important factors

NEET UG 2023: Students from India often choose Russia, the Middle East or China as the preferred destination to study medical courses, however, for some years, Nepal has also started attracting Indian students to study MBBS. According to the government data, nearly 2300 students were present in Nepal in 2022, out of which 1437 candidates appeared for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and 373 students cleared it.

Several experts think that after the Covid pandemic and the RussiaUkraine war, Indian students’ attention will divert more towards Nepal as the countries not only have cultural similarities and less distance but also similar medical books.

Eligibility

— Candidates should not be less than 17 years of age.

— Interested students should have passed 10+2 with at least 50 per cent in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. 

— Candidates should be NEET qualified.

— It is compulsory for candidates to possess and submit all the original documents and certificates. 

Course structure

The course of MBBS in Nepal is 5 and a half years long, which includes a one year internship.

The study curriculum in Nepal is divided into three parts, Basic Sciences, Community Medicine and Clinical Medicine. Basic Sciences include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology,  Pathology and Pharmacology whereas Community Medicine includes Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Demography, Health education, Environmental health, Nutrition, Sociology and Clinical Medicine. Clinical Medicine include Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Ophthalmology Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Medicine (including psychiatry and dermatology and venereal disease), Surgery (including orthopaedics anesthesiology, radiology and dental) Obstetrics and Gynaecology Pediatrics.

However, every institute will have a different structure and it is important for candidates to check with their institutes.

Admission process

Students need to clear the entrance exam which is conducted by the Nepal Medical Commission in order to study MBBS in any of the Nepal-registered colleges and will need to go through an interview which is held by the colleges or the universities. Students also need to submit eligibility certificates in order to pursue MBBS from Nepal. Final selections of the students will be done on the basis of their performance in the entrance exam as well as their interviews. 

Documents required

The following documents are required to get an invitation letter to take admission in any of the colleges

— 10+2 certificate and marksheet

— Copy of passport

— Invitation letter

— Birth certificate

— Migration certificate

— Payment slips

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the first year range from Rs 25 lakh to 35 lakh (approximately), and the tuition fees for the full course range from Rs 35 lakh to 70 lakh (approximately).

Recognised colleges

There are many medical colleges in Nepal, some of them being the National Medical College Birgunj, Universal College of Medical Sciences, Nepalgunj Medical College, Janaki Medical College, College of Medical Sciences Bharatpur, and more.

Medium of teaching

Every medical college in Nepal teaches MBBS in English.
