The Pune city police are looking for admission racketeers who have allegedly cheated people from Hyderabad after falsely promising them admissions in medical colleges in Maharashtra under management quota for Rs 65 lakh.
Following a complaint by Ramkrishna Elapollu (49), a businessman from Hyderabad, at the Vimantal police station, the police have booked two suspects, identified as Rohit alias Kabir Sanjay Sharma and Suresh Singh.
Along with Ramkrishna, the suspects have also cheated three more persons from Hyderabad by taking Rs 20 lakh from each of them between September 10 and 13, 2016.
Assistant police inspector M R Khokle, who is investigating the case, said the fraudsters circulated bulk messages on cellphones across India claiming they could ensure admissions for medical colleges in Maharashtra through management quotas for Rs 65 lakh.
They also gave their contact numbers in the messages.
“The complainants from Hyderabad contacted the suspects seeking admission for their children at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s medical college. The complainants came to Pune and held meetings with the suspects at places on the Airport Road in Viman Nagar area. The suspects opened bank account in the name of Bharati Vidyapeeth Trust at ICICI bank. They asked the complainants to deposit demand drafts of Rs 20 lakh each in the name of Bharati Vidyapeeth Trust while promising to secure a place for their children in medical college. However, after taking a total Rs 80 lakh, the suspects did not turn up,” said Khokle.
Police suspect that fraudsters may have cheated more persons and have appealed people to be cautious about such admission racketeers.
