Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur wore a Chanderi bandhgala with buttons, engraved with ‘Bharat’ in several languages, at the Cannes film festival in France last year. This time, his junior — Minister of State for I&B, L Murugan — who led the Indian delegation was seen walking the red carpet in a traditional Tamil attire of veshti. While his shirt was embroidered with the G20 logo, the scarf had the Indian flag embroidered on it.

Ideas of March

The Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra seems to have had some unintended consequences. At a time Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was leading the Yatra through the country late last year, a Bareilly-based political group applied to register the name ‘Bharat Jodo Party’ with the Election Commission in December 2022. Having completed the registration process, the Bharat Jodo Party was among 2,597 registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) in the updated notification of RUPPs issued by the EC on Monday. The EC also issued a revised notification of national parties, reflecting recent inclusion of AAP and removal of NCP and CPI from the list of national parties. India now has six national parties.

Going Global

A UT-cadre IPS officer of 1992 batch has taken voluntary retirement from service in order to work in a full-fledged role with the Interpol. The officer, Madan Mohan Oberoi, 57, joined the Interpol in 2019 after taking unpaid leave from the Central government. He is at present working as Interpol’s executive director for Technology and Innovation and his five-year contract expires next year. Oberoi has thus decided to take VRS and work with the global police organisation for one more year. Oberoi had earlier worked as director (Cybercrime Directorate) in the Interpol in Singapore.
