TWO people were killed and five more were injured after a private passenger bus rammed into a goods carrying truck on Pune Solapur Highway near Kurkumbh in Daund taluka of Pune district. Police have arrested the driver of the bus who sustained injuries in the accident.
Officials from Daund police station under Pune Rural jurisdiction said that the accident took place around 6 am on Saturday on Solapur to Pune corridor of the highway near Kurkumbh’s MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) office, located around 100 kilometres from Pune city.
“As many as seven persons travelling in the bus sustained injuries due to the impact on one of sides of the bus after hitting the truck. Probe suggests that the driver of the bus was not maintaining adequate distance between the bus and the truck and driving at high speed,” said Assistant Inspector Tukaram Rathod, who is investigating the case.
“At one point where the truck slowed down a bit, the bus rammed into the truck from behind. The injured persons rushed to a nearby hospital in ambulances from a nearby health centre. Two of them succumbed to their injuries later and five injured are being treated at a hospital. The driver, who is among the injured, has been placed under arrest,” he said.
Those killed in the accident have been identified as Shobha Gurunath Kalbande (45), a resident of Karve Nagar and Mahadev Bhise (45), a resident of Pimpri Chinchwad. Three of the four other injured persons have been identified as Rajashree More, Akash Pokarkar and Anil Badekar.
Police have identified the driver as Saleem Mohboob Sadakwala who has been booked at Daund police station under charges of rash driving and causing death and injuries due to negligence in a case registered on Sunday afternoon.
