After the state government directive to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the civic body has begun to initiate action against city bars and pubs operating illegally. In the last four days, it has pulled down structures over upto 2.5 lakh sq feet area built mainly by bars and restaurants.
By Friday, PMC had made vacant an area of about 43,545 sq feet that bars and hotels in Mohammadwadi and Hadapsar area had encroached upon. It also took action on structures that had encroached on over 21,000 sq feet area in Karvenagar alongside Mutha river.
In Kalyaninagar, Kondhwa Khurd and Karvenagar, the PMC on Thursday pulled down structures over 1.03 lakh sq feet area which included bars and restaurants. The action in Karvenagar initiated after the Bombay High Court rejected a petition seeking protection for property owners along Mutha river.
The action began on June 25 with the civic body demolishing encroachments over as much as 36,845 sq feet. However, the largest drive was carried out on June 26, wherein PMC tore down illegal structures over 56,000 sq feet built mainly by bars in Baner and Koregaon Park.
