A scheduled emergency blackout drill was conducted at Pune Airport on Saturday from 8:25pm to 8:45pm. The drill aimed to test the airport’s preparedness and response to potential power outages or other emergencies.
The drill started with all lights and power systems shut off. Airport staff and emergency responders implemented emergency procedures. Incoming flights were instructed to hover for 20-30 minutes. Regular announcements were made during the drill to keep passengers informed and calm.
Ahead of the drill, notifications were sent to airlines, air traffic control, and other stakeholders. Airport staff were briefed on the drill’s objectives and procedures, and announcements were made in the terminal building informing passengers about the drill. Medical teams remained on standby throughout the drill.
Details provided by Airport director Santosh Dhoke said that the drill was completed without any major issues. Everyone involved remained calm, and no adverse observations were made. Airport staff and emergency responders demonstrated effective communication and coordination.
According to Dhoke, the airport’s emergency response plan was effective in ensuring a smooth response to the simulated blackout. Five planes from the carrier IndiGo Airlines were cancelled on Saturday due to the implementation of Operation Sindoor and subsequent temporary suspension of flights at certain destination airports.
