Mumbai started facing 10 per cent water cut in quantity and 15 per cent in timings from Wednesday evening, as the city’s water stock is down by 16 per cent as compared to last November.

All commercial, educational and residential units in Mumbai and some areas of Thane and Bhiwandi will suffer this 10 per cent water cut. While the BMC supplies 3,800 million litres of water everyday to the city, the quantity supplied to households decreased by 380 million litres from Wednesday evening.

“Following the drop in level in the lakes supplying water, 10 per cent water cut will be levied. As of November 1, there is only 293 days of water stock left in all the seven lakes that supply water to the city,” read the BMC’s proposal to the standing committee meeting. The decision has angered politicians. “There has been an unofficial water cut in the city since over a month. BMC is not being honest to people about its decision,” said Ravi Raja, group leader, Congress, in the BMC.

The BMC will take stock of the condition every month. By the end of monsoon in September, the city needs 14.47 lakh million litres, or 365 days of water stock, for a summer without cuts. ENS
