The DB Marg police have arrested a 65-year-old man wanted in a case of theft that took place 30 years ago.
The police claim they had visited his native place in Uttar Pradesh a number of times, but he always got prior information and escaped before the police reached his village.
This time, accused Dwijendra Dubey once again got prior information about Mumbai Police’s arrival at his native place to nab him. He managed to flee and came to Mumbai on October 30. However, his luck did not favour him again, and the police got his son’s mobile number and contacted many people whom the accused’s son had spoken to last week.
The location and information of both were obtained, and it was established that the accused reached Mumbai and was staying at his relative’s place in Ghatkopar area, said police sub-inspector Azim Shaikh of DB Marg police station.
Another team in Mumbai then started tracing him and arrested him from South Mumbai. According to the police, Dubey is a native of Basti district in Uttar Pradesh. During his young age, Dubey was staying in Mumbai and was working in a private firm. He allegedly stole cash from his employer’s office in Charni Road and fled to his native place. A case was then registered at DB Marg police station under Section 381 of the IPC in 1995. During the investigation, the police had arrested Dubey from his native place and recovered Rs 20,000 from him. He came out on bail within a week but did not report to the police or attend any court hearing, said Shaikh.
The Girgaum court, meanwhile, issued a standing non-bailable warrant against Dubey. A police team from DB Marg then started searching him again, and the team reached his native place in Basti, Uttar Pradesh. The team followed him from Ayodhya to Mumbai via Lucknow, and on the basis of technical investigation, the accused was detained and arrested from Grand Road area on Friday, added the officer.
In another case, the Pydhonie police have arrested one Rajaram Tiwari, who had been hiding in Mumbai for seven years. Tiwari had allegedly killed a person in his native place in Katni district in Madhya Pradesh in 2018 and came to Mumbai. The FIR was registered at Barhi police station in Katni. The police got information that the accused was hiding in the Masjid Bunder area. The local police in Katni shared the information with Pydhonie police.
The police, based on the specific information, nabbed him on Thursday. He was brought to the police station, and during interrogation, he confessed to the case. The Madhya Pradesh police came to Mumbai and the accused was handed over to them, said a police officer.
