Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said that his party wants reservations for women in state Assemblies and Parliament to be implemented even before the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“We have women reservations in local civic bodies but the issue of 33% reservation for women is pending for many years now. It is time to implement women’s reservation in Assembly and Parliament,” said Pawar, addressing a press conference in Pune.

Pawar said that his party will decide its stand on the UCC after the law commission’s report.

“There are several stakeholders including minorities such as Sikh, Christian, Jain and others whose opinions need to be taken into account,” said Pawar.

The NCP chief also said that the opposition parties will be meeting in Bengaluru on July 13 and 14.

“The meeting was initially scheduled in Shimla. But the venue had to be changed due to heavy rains,” he said.
