Days after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the refurbished Wonders Park at Nerul in Navi Mumbai, six people including a couple of children were injured after they fell from an umbrella-shaped joyride at the amusement park Saturday night.
The amusement park in Nerul was refurbished by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) at a cost of Rs 28 crore and was inaugurated by CM Shinde on May 30, and opened to the public on June 1.
NMMC Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar has ordered an inquiry into the mishap.
According to officials, all seven rides at Wonders Park were operational since June 1. They added that independent operators have been assigned for all seven rides through Ms. Ashwini Construction and Infra, the operator of Wonders Park, and regular inspections were also being carried out by technicians.
However, the accident took place around 9 pm on June 3, when the technical inspection of the ride, Sky Swinger, was being carried out. Around six people sustained minor injuries in the accident. All of them were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and were discharged after treatment.
“The occurrence of such an incident is unfortunate and it is a serious matter. An in-depth investigation should be conducted in the matter and after checking and ascertaining the cause of the incident, action should be taken against those responsible for it,” Narvekar said.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has slammed the administration over the accident.
“Why was the Wonders Park inaugurated in a hurry? The rides were not safe. We demand an investigation into the matter and action should be taken against the culprits,” local MNS leader Savinay Mhatre said.
The Wonders Park was shut during the Covid-19 pandemic and it was refurbished by the NMMC during that time.
Since the Park will remain closed during the rainy season from June 15 onwards, the public had demanded that it be opened for at least 15 days prior to it, said officials.
