Corporators continue to play name games

The obsession of corporators with road names continues.

The obsession of corporators with road names continues. The latest report released by Praja Foundation Wednesday claims one in every five questions raised by corporators at ward meetings between March and December 2012 related to naming and renaming of roads and chowks. Of the 672 questions asked in the period,127 were about road names.

In an earlier report released in February 2012,Praja had claimed while roads and water supply topped citizen concerns, corporators spent most time discussing naming and renaming of roads and chowks.

“A white paper on civic issues released by Praja two years ago showed maximum questions by corporators in civic body were on renaming roads. Renaming roads continues to be the top agenda of new corporators who have completed a year,” said Milind Mhaske of the foundation.

The report revealed most,57,questions were asked in meetings of N ward in Ghatkopar. Of these,17 were regarding naming/renaming of roads.

M east ward (Chembur) and P south ward (Goregaon) had the highest number of councillors,5,asking no question from March to December 2012. Only three of the 227 corporators asked more than 10 questions in ward committee meetings.

“Representatives are to communicate grievances of constituents to BMC. However, the discrepancy in questions asked by corporators and complaints of citizens shows interest levels of these elected representatives,” said Niati Mehta, managing trustee of Praja.
